HOW THE STARTING GATE GOT ITS START
In the early 1950s, Guy “Sonny” Antonacci started a sanitation business with a single truck – the beginning of a family legacy built on vision, hard work, and entrepreneurial spirit. Decades later, that same drive led to the creation of The Starting Gate at GreatHorse.
Set atop the former Hampden Country Club, the Antonacci family reimagined a fading property into something extraordinary. After a three-year, $45 million transformation, GreatHorse emerged as the region’s most luxurious private club, and in 2015, The Starting Gate made its debut as its signature event venue.
Even before opening, couples and clients were reserving dates, confident the craftsmanship and quality that define GreatHorse would shine through. Today, a decade later, The Starting Gate at GreatHorse continues to set the standard for elegance, service, and unforgettable celebrations.
THE STORY BEHIND THE NAMES
Gran Cavallo–or GreatHorse, as we call it–is inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s legendary horse sculpture and reflects our club’s deep connection to thoroughbred racing. For over 50 years, the Antonacci family has been a nationally recognized name in horse breeding and racing, including ownership of five Hambletonian Champions. Their passion and heritage are celebrated throughout the property.
